A volcanic crater containing two lakes — one green, one blue. One of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe, and one of the main reasons people fall in love with the Azores.
The Legend
According to Azorean legend, a king forbade his daughter — a princess — from seeing a shepherd boy she had fallen in love with. When they met for the last time, they wept together. Her tears formed the blue lake (Lagoa Azul), and his tears formed the green lake (Lagoa Verde).
The scientific explanation is equally fascinating: the different colours are caused by varying depths, algae concentrations, and the way light reflects off the water at different times of day. The green lake is shallower; the blue lake is deeper and clearer.
Both lakes sit inside a volcanic caldera — the collapsed summit of an ancient volcano — at an altitude of approximately 550 metres. The crater is 12 km wide, making it one of the largest calderas in the Azores.

Practical Information
Hiking
Three official trails — from a gentle lakeside walk to a full crater rim circuit.
The classic route — descend from the iconic viewpoint into the crater, walk along the lake shore, and end in the village. Stunning throughout.
A full loop around the crater rim with panoramic views of both lakes and the Atlantic. One of the most spectacular hikes in the Azores.
A gentle walk along the shore of the blue lake — perfect for families, beginners, or those who want to enjoy the scenery without a strenuous hike.

Sete Cidades is a volcanic crater on São Miguel island in the Azores, containing two lakes — one green (Lagoa Verde) and one blue (Lagoa Azul). It's one of the most photographed landscapes in Europe and is famous for its extraordinary natural beauty, the legend of the princess and the shepherd, and its dramatic misty mornings. It was voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal.
Sete Cidades is approximately 45 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada. There is no direct public bus service to the crater — renting a car is strongly recommended. Alternatively, many tour operators in Ponta Delgada offer day trips to Sete Cidades, often combined with other western São Miguel attractions.
Vista do Rei (King's View) is the most famous viewpoint — it offers a panoramic view of both lakes in the crater. Arrive before 10am to avoid crowds and catch the morning mist. Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is another excellent viewpoint on the crater rim with different perspectives.
Swimming is permitted in Lagoa Azul (the blue lake) at designated areas near the village. The water is cool but refreshing in summer. Swimming in Lagoa Verde (the green lake) is not recommended due to algae. Always check current conditions locally before swimming.
Most visitors stay in Ponta Delgada (45 minutes away) and visit Sete Cidades as a day trip. There are a few guesthouses in Sete Cidades village itself for those who want to experience the crater at dawn or dusk. Azores Remote Stay can help you find mid-term rentals in Ponta Delgada with easy access to Sete Cidades.
Absolutely — in fact, many visitors prefer Sete Cidades in winter. The crater fills with mist and cloud, creating an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere. The hydrangeas are not in bloom, but the green landscape is lush and dramatic. Winter temperatures are 14–18°C — mild and comfortable for hiking.
Base yourself in Ponta Delgada — 45 minutes from Sete Cidades — with a fully furnished mid-term rental. From €900/month, all bills included.
