About Ponta Delgada Cruise Port

The Portas do Mar cruise terminal is one of the most conveniently located in Europe — it sits directly on the waterfront of Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel and the largest city in the Azores. Step off the ship and you are immediately in the heart of the city.

Ponta Delgada is a primary stop on transatlantic repositioning cruises — ships crossing between Europe and the Americas in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). MSC, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Costa Cruises all include the Azores on their Atlantic itineraries.

In 2025, the Azores welcomed 157,685 cruise passengers across 175+ ship calls — a 3.6% increase from 2024. The top source markets are the United States (21.2%), Spain (20.8%), and Germany (20.7%).

What To Do in Ponta Delgada

Whether you have 4 hours or a full day — here is exactly how to spend your time.

Best for: Ships with 4–6 hours in port. Fully walkable — no transport needed. Allow 30 min buffer before your ship departs.

09:00

Disembark at Portas do Mar

The cruise terminal is a modern complex with shops, cafes and tourist info. Pick up a free map and head straight into the city — it's a 5-minute walk.

09:15

Portas da Cidade — The City Gates

The iconic 18th-century three-arched gates in black basalt and white limestone. The most photographed spot in Ponta Delgada. Located in Praça de Gonçalo Velho, 5 min walk from the port.

Best photo angle: stand back in the square, morning light is perfect.
09:30

Mercado da Graça — Local Market

The historic covered market with local produce, Azorean cheeses, pineapples, and flowers. Try a pastel de nata and a bica (espresso). Best visited in the morning when it's most lively.

Buy Azorean cheese and pineapple jam — excellent gifts that fit in your luggage.
10:30

Jardim Botânico António Borges

A lush, free botanical garden with a "Jurassic Park" atmosphere — giant trees, grottos, and exotic plants. About 15 min walk from the market. One of the most underrated spots in the city.

Free entry. Allow 45 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes.
11:30

Forte de São Brás & Military Museum

A 16th-century fortress at the west end of the harbour with panoramic views over the marina and the sea. Houses the Military Museum of the Azores. Free entry.

Great viewpoint for photos of the harbour and your cruise ship.
12:30

Lunch in the City Centre

Try Cozinha Velha or O Miroma for traditional Azorean food. Alcatra (beef stew), caldo de peixe (fish soup), and queijadas (sweet cheese pastries) are local specialities.

Budget €12–18 per person for a full meal with drinks.
14:00

Waterfront Walk & Return

Stroll back along Avenida do Infante Dom Henrique — the main waterfront boulevard. Browse the shops at Portas do Mar before re-boarding. Allow 30 min buffer before departure.
