The most iconic hike on São Miguel. The trail follows the northern rim of the Sete Cidades caldera — a massive volcanic crater containing the famous blue and green twin lakes. Starting near the Canary Forest, the path descends into the Sete Cidades village with sweeping views across the caldera at every turn.

  • Panoramic views of the blue and green twin lakes
  • Starts at Mata do Canário forest — ancient laurisilva
  • Descends into the historic Sete Cidades village
  • One of the most photographed landscapes in Portugal
  • Best in morning light before afternoon clouds
Tip: Start early — the Vista do Rei viewpoint (accessible by car) gives the classic postcard view before you begin the trail. The caldera is frequently in cloud by midday.

Practical Hiking Information

Everything you need to know before you set out

Official Trail Maps
All official trails are marked on the Azores Trails website (trails.visitazores.com). Download GPX files before you go — mobile signal can be unreliable on remote trails.
What to Wear
Layers are essential — weather changes fast. Waterproof jacket, hiking boots (not trainers), and sun protection. Even in summer, the higher trails can be cold and wet.
Water & Food
Carry at least 1.5L of water per person. Most trails have no facilities. Bring snacks. The Furnas valley has restaurants — most other trailheads do not.
Trail Closures
Trails can close due to weather, forestry work, or conservation. Always check the official Azores Trails website for real-time status before setting out.
Getting There
A rental car is essential for most trails. Public buses are infrequent and don't reach most trailheads. Ponta Delgada is 30–60 minutes from most starting points.
Permits
Pico da Vara requires a free permit — apply at the official Azores Trails website. Lagoa do Fogo requires a shuttle during peak season (Jun 15–Sep 30). All other trails are free and open.

Hiking as Part of the Remote Work Lifestyle

One of the most common things remote workers say about São Miguel is that the hiking changed their relationship with work. When you can finish a focused morning session and be standing on the rim of a volcanic caldera by lunchtime, the work-life balance shifts in a way that's hard to replicate anywhere else.

Cognitive reset
Research consistently shows that time in nature reduces cortisol and improves focus. A 2-hour hike mid-week is more effective than a weekend away.
30–60 min from your desk
Every major trail on São Miguel is within 30–60 minutes of Ponta Delgada. No need to plan a trip — just go after work.
Completely free
Most trails have no entry fee. The best hiking in Europe, on your doorstep, for nothing. This is the Azores advantage.
Community hikes
The nomad community on São Miguel organises regular group hikes. A great way to meet people and explore the island together.
