Non-EU citizens who work remotely for clients or employers outside Portugal. EU citizens can stay freely without a visa. The D8 requires proof of income of at least €3,040/month and a valid work contract or client invoices.
What is the Azores 20% IRS reduction?
Residents registered in the Azores benefit from a 20% reduction on Portuguese national IRS rates. Combined with the NHR flat rate of 20%, this can be extremely advantageous for qualifying remote workers.
Do I need a NIF before arriving?
You do not need one before landing, but you will want to get one in the first week. You can apply at any Portuguese tax office (Finanças) — bring your passport and proof of address. It takes about 30 minutes.
