Real Stories
Personal accounts from remote workers about their first month on São Miguel — the good, the unexpected, and the reason they stayed longer than planned.

"The loneliness never arrived."

I arrived with two suitcases, a Notion doc called "São Miguel Plan" and absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. Day three I sat on the balcony watching the harbour lights and genuinely cried — but not from sadness.
"Best decision I've ever made."

My old commute in CDMX was 90 minutes each way. Now I surf for 45 minutes before my 9am standup and the whole dev team still hasn't figured out why my code got better. It's the air, I think.
"The landscape just does something to your brain."

My office view in London was a Pret A Manger and a bus stop. My "office view" here is a steam vent in a volcanic valley. I've started writing more than I've written in five years. The landscape just does something to your brain.
"Five months in, we're not leaving anytime soon."

Relocating together sounded romantic in theory. In practice, sharing a workspace at home while both on calls was almost our undoing. The coworking spaces here saved our relationship — and our productivity.
